What it is

Ripping Payments is a Stripe account connected under Ripping's. Your apps charge on it directly; the money goes to your bank, and Ripping's fee rides along with each payment. There is no Stripe dashboard to log into: the Payments page in Ripping shows your balance and payouts, and Stripe-hosted pages handle bank details.

It takes cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay, one-time payments and monthly or yearly subscriptions.

Setting it up

Only the account owner can do this. Open Payments (the page is headed Money).

  1. Under Ripping Payments, pick your Bank country. This is where Stripe will pay out to, and it is fixed once the account is created. The list has 33 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, most of the EU, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, the UAE and India.
  2. Press Set up Ripping Payments. You go to Stripe's hosted onboarding, which asks for your details, identity and bank account. Stripe collects what it needs; Ripping stores none of it.
  3. Come back. The page says "Welcome back. Checking your account with Stripe." and shows one of:
    • Setup incomplete: Stripe still needs something. Press Continue setup.
    • Under review by Stripe: you submitted everything; Stripe is checking.
    • Active: charges are enabled. Apps can take money.
  4. Refresh status asks Stripe for the current state at any time. Stripe also tells Ripping when the account changes.

If the onboarding link expired, the page says "That link expired. Start again below." Press the button again for a fresh link.

If Ripping's own Stripe key refuses the request, you see "Ripping Payments couldn't be set up yet." with the reason. That is on the deployment's side, not yours.

From the editor

When an app's code can take money and payouts are not connected, a banner appears above the chat: "This app can take payments. Connect payouts and it starts charging for real … Until then a buyer sees 'payments aren't open yet'." Connect payouts opens the same Stripe onboarding.

Balance and payouts

Once active, the Payments page shows three tiles:

  • Available: cleared money Stripe can pay out.
  • On its way: money still clearing.
  • Last payouts: the five most recent, with date, amount and status. Before the first: "None yet — Stripe pays out automatically once money clears."

Payouts run on Stripe's automatic schedule to the bank account you gave. Under the tiles, a line shows the account id, country, currency and whether payouts are on.

Updating bank details

Press Update bank details. A Stripe-hosted page opens where you change the bank account or business details, then returns you to the Payments page.

The fee

Ripping keeps 2% of each payment, and Stripe's own processing fee is taken as usual. The 2% is a deployment setting (RIPPING_PAYMENTS_FEE_PERCENT); the Payments page always shows the current figure in its description. On a subscription the fee is 2% of every invoice, for as long as it runs.

The Sales tab and the Payments page's revenue section show the fee on each row, and "All time" is shown gross with the net after fees underneath.

Refunds

Refund from the app's Sales tab. Refunds are full only, and cannot be undone. When a Ripping Payments charge is refunded, Ripping's fee is returned as well, so the buyer gets the whole amount back and you are not left paying the fee on money you returned.

Using it in an app

Tell the builder what to sell. The Payments page suggests the shape: "Add a checkout button for the Pro plan at $29 using Ripping Payments." The builder wires the checkout; you add the product and its price on the project's Settings tab under Payments. See Products and sales.
